Member of Elections Commission, Ahmed Akram, has said that vote boxes are to be kept in Singapore and Thailand, depending on the amount of voter registrations. The vote boxes will be places in various locations for the upcoming Parliamentary elections.
Akram said this during the PSM show “Rajje Miadhu” and noted that at least 100 voters should be registered at any location to allow boxes. He further reiterated that the plan was to situate vote boxes in all areas, similar to the previous Presidential election. Akram said however that one condition for setting up any vote box is that at least 100 people register to vote at the location. He said that if the quota of 100 registered voters are not met at any one location, the opportunity to register under that location will be opened again.
Akram also said that the voters list of Parliamentary elections will be made public by the Elections Commission. He said that there are 2,336 newly eligible voters on the list. He also noted that the names on voters list will be made public differently during this election, and that the ID card number and birthdate will be listed. Akram said that this change was brought about to gain eaae in finding those under the legal age of 18 years.
The Elections Commission member said that an opportunity will be opened to submit complaints regarding voters list starting from today. He noted that arrangements have been made for the public to submit their complaints from any part of Maldives.
Akram said that the registration process is only for those who would be voting in a different votr box that what they were registered under, for the Presidential elections. He said that this arrangement was made to bring ease of process to voters.
While the 19th Parliamentary elections are set to take place on 6 April 2019, the Elections Commission has opened up opportunity to run in the elections.The deadline for declaring candidacy for Parliament is 21 February 2019.
