Ministry of Environment and Energy has declared that national standards will be imposed on the provision of water supply.
The Minister of Environment and Energy, Dr Hussain Rasheed spoke on the current administration’s pledge to regulate water supply and minimize plastic use at a press conference held by the Ministry. He said that similar to standards governing provision of electricity services, water supply services should also be carried out under a national standard.
The Minister noted that while the use of polluted water leads to medical issues, it is vital that standards are imposed on water supply services.
He noted that there are 153 islands in Maldives that do not have proper water supply services at this time. Minister Hussain Rasheed reiterated that efforts are being directed to find a solution to this issue.
The Minister highlighted that while the project undertaking is to cost MVR 20 -20 million, it is imperative to ensure that the water provided is safe to drink.
Additionally, he noted the current administration's 100-day pledge to ensure that the cost and efforts of citizens in acquiring drinking water is minimized. He said that the Ministry has begun work on ensuring that the water provided by the national water company is of quality and up to standards. Minister Hussain Rasheed reiterated that the work on generating awareness among citizens on the quality of water supply standards, in an effort to cut down on plastics usage is also underway.
