Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb's bid for asylum in India has been rejected by Indian authorities, who have since deported him back to the Maldives.

According to Indian media reports, Adeeb along with the crew of the tugboat in which he traveled to India were handed over to Maldivian security personnel at the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

The tugboat was denied permission to dock at the Tuticorin Old Port in Tamil Nadu when it reached there on Thursday morning after officials learned about Adeeb's presence in the boat.

The Maldivian team of security personnel had arrived to receive Adeeb midnight last night. After the required procedure was complete, Adeeb was handed over to them around 1:00am.

The former vice president had fled Maldives ahead of his questioning on July 31 over one of Maldives’ biggest corruption scandal from Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).
