At the court hearing today, the state prosecutor has said that a plea agreement has been signed with the former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor for a 20-year prison sentence and a fine of MVR 2 million.

The state brought up the seven charges against the former Vice President on Wednesday. They are, accessory to corruption, abusing official authority, abusing the authority of office for personal gain and two counts of money laundering.

Presenting the details of the plea agreement with Adeeb at the sentencing hearing set at the Criminal Court this morning, the State Prosecutor said the plea agreement includes admission to two counts of accessory to corruption, two counts of corruption and three counts of money laundering.

She said that the agreement was signed on 25 September 2019 by Adeeb in the presence of his lawyer, Mahfooz Saeed and the Prosecutor General.

The delivery of the verdict was initially set for 12 October 2020 but the Judge presiding, Hassan Saeed decided to hold the hearing today at 6 p.m.

The Criminal Court is trying the case again after the High Court ordered a re-trial after the Criminal Court initially dismissed it. And so, on Wednesday’s preliminary hearing on the re-trial, the former Vice President pleaded guilty to all seven charges.
